LMC Community Update!

March 3, 2008

MAPLE SYRUP

The Maple Syrup Festival is approaching with great speed, but not as fast as the sap dripping from the Maple Trees into the buckets! The warm days and freezing nights make for a great sugar season!

LMC has been a sugar camp, actually two sugar camps, for over a hundred years! The sugar bush is quite mature and has provided sweet sap to generations! Come and experience the taste of the maple tree over a plate of pancakes. Sample yummy and delicious sausage too! The bluegrass band will entertain while you eat. Then off to the sugar bush by foot or by wagon ride. Spend a few hours with us next Sunday, March 9th!

St. Mark Lutheran School, from Brunswick, Trinity Lutheran School, in Marysville, and Lakewood Lutheran School, located in Lakewood, have each had a class of students learn about the maple sugar process. The children learned to identify maple trees, what size circumference is needed before a tree can be tapped, and how to drill and tap a tree. They followed the process into the sugar house and through the evaporator. Sugar on Snow is the highlight of the class, it is a natural taffy made from the maple sugar.

WELCOME LISA

Lisa Walda has joined the LMC staff as the new Program Director. She comes to us from Michigan and has worked at Stony Lake and El Camino Pines, both are ELCA camps, in the past. As a youth director she has lead youth activities within the congregation and off onto different adventures of service and retreat ministries.

Lisa, may you provide a beacon of light at LMC reflecting the love of Christ to all who enter this Holy Ground!

If you have an idea of how we can improve the retreat or summer ministries, or if you want to send her a welcome, write her at LMC@lomocamps.org.

GOOD-BYE JULIE

Julie Besser headed off to Vail, Colorado this winter to experience a truly snowy winter. Her snow boarding, skiing and snowball making skills have been improving immensely over what was possible in Ohio. Many have grown under her leadership and mentoring spirit, as it focused the light away from self and towards Christ.

Julie, may God bless your journey and future as a light for Christ!

TEACHERS NEEDED

The school season at camp is upon us and we still have positions available for teacher-naturalists with Christian love and commitment. We serve both Christian and public schools during the spring. If you know of someone who would be available from the middle or end of March through the end of May, send them our way!

The experience includes teaching natural history, group building and social history classes. The afternoon and evening sessions provide extensions of classes, along with creative events, devotions, campfires, crafts, games. Christian tree huggers with experience in youth programming are encouraged to apply at LMC@lomocamps.org.

60th ANNIVERSARY!

This year we are celebrating 60 years since the dedication of Lutheran Memorial Camp to the service of God and in memory of soldiers who served in World War II. The dream began in 1944 and came to fruition in October 1948 at the dedication. Luther League youth worked on cabins and cleared the land next to the "dollar a day" men. These men were paid a silver dollar for each day they worked on site so that they would be covered by insurance. Many of them deposited the silver dollar in a box at the end of the pay role line, donating their day's earnings back to LMC.

The camp we know and love today has changed and yet it hasn't. God's love is still experienced by those who seek it in God's Creation of land and people. Help us celebrate this year. Send us your memories and pictures so that the history may be more complete than ever before. The original founders, workers, and Luther Leaguers are disappearing as they age. Help us preserve the stories they lived and shared. Share also your faith development as you remember your camp days. Write us!
